先日、 Word Spy という、昔からある新語採集サイトを紹介したが、似たようなブログがこの間、『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』のサイトでも立ち上がった。それは、Ben Schott 氏による Schott's Vocab だ。４月11日に投稿された "Elsewhere: African Slang for H.I.V./AIDS" が示すように、内容は英語に限らない。

２月16日の投稿によると、 Oshin という言葉は domestic worker （家政婦）の意味でベトナム語で使われているそうだ。この言葉はベトナムでも放送された日本のテレビドラマ『おしん』に由来するという。私は仕事柄、honcho や zori など、英語で定着した日本語からの外来語にだいぶ前から興味を持っているが、日本語が他の言語に浸透しているケースはほとんど知らない。さっそく、日本在住のベトナム人に Oshin が一般的に知られている言葉かどうかを聞いたら、

. . .  what is said in the blog is true. It has become common after the drama "Oshin" was shown on TV. . . .  I think the impact of hardships during the childhood of the character named "Oshin" was so big so that we use the word "Oshin" to designate domestic servants (the character has to do all the housework, cooking, washing clothes, taking care for the old in the family, etc.). However, I have to mention that we did pay our respect to the girl in the drama.
