読者から次のメールをいただいた。

ウェブサーフィンをしていて、時々次のような「言葉遊び」を目にします。

あさからばんまで、汗水流して、
りっぱだと褒められなくても、もくもくと
がんばって働いている、そんな
とうさんの子に
うまれてよかった

最初の文字だけをつなげると「ありがとう」となります。これは縦書きと横書きの両方がある日本語ならではの遊びなのでしょうか。それとも英語にもこういったものがあるのでしょうか。

（これは日本語では「折句 おりく」と言い、在原業平の「かきつばた」の句で有名ですが、調べたところ英語でも「アクロスティック acrostic」と言って一般的なようですね。（知りませんでした））

英語の acrostic で私がすぐに思い出すのは、Lewis Carroll の Through the Looking-Glass （『鏡の国のアリス』 ）の最後の詩。

A boat beneath a sunny sky,
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July--

Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear--

Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memories die.
Autumn frosts have slain July.

Still she haunts me, phantomwise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes.

Children yet, the tale to hear,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Lovingly shall nestle near.

In a Wonderland they lie,
Dreaming as the days go by,
Dreaming as the summers die:

Ever drifting down the stream--
Lingering in the golden gleam--
Life, what is it but a dream?

各行の最初の文字を上から読むと、 Alice Pleasance Liddell という、「アリス」のモデルになった少女の本名が表れる。（キャロルの Alice への感情はこの詩が語るように純粋ではなかったようだが。）

この「ことばのくも」のアクロスティックを作ってみたので、後日、それを披露する。
