遅くなったが、『Web 英語青年』９月号関連のくも本を探してみた。

堀江珠喜氏の「ワイルド改葬百周年」にはワイルドの『サロメ』がフランス語で執筆されたことが書かれているので『サロメ』の仏語版を探すべきだったが、Aubrey Beardsley のイラストが素晴らしいので、ここでは1907年の英語版を紹介する。

Robert Rossのイントロでは

"SALOME" has made the author's name a household word wherever the English language is not spoken.

の not が面白い。

そして渡辺利雄氏の「The New York Times Book Review の100年　——書評と文学史」は、子どものころから NYTBR を読んできた私には特に興味深い。渡辺氏のエッセーで思い出したのは、この間 Internet Archive で見つけた、19世紀半ばごろフィラデルフィアで出版された Bizarre, For Fireside and Wayside だ。この忘れられた雑誌にも書評が載っていたから思い出したが、Bizarre というタイトルからわかるように、ホラーなど、奇妙な内容もある。例えば、1852年10月22日号に載っている "An Adventure" という短編には、次の一節がある。

I knew it would be better, if possible, to avoid letting my tormentor observe my extreme terror, and endeavoured to govern the movements of my trembling fingers, but the moment I tried to fix my gaze upon the rocks before me, a pair of glowing eyes seemed to glare from between them into mine, while I distinctly heard a low, wild, chuckling laugh, as if the terrible creature were enjoying the horror I vainly endeavored to conceal.

同じセンテンスの中で endeavoured と endeavored の両スペルが使われていて、この号の日付が「OCOBER 22, 1853」となり、その他にも誤植が多く見られることから充分に校正された出版物とは言えないが、当時の米国地方都市の文化を知るためにも読み応えのある雑誌だ。研究テーマを探している米文学者には価値があるかも知れない。
