その若者たちは必ずしも「もぐもぐ」と話すわけではないようだが、この語は2005年に Eric Masunaga という元ミュージシャンの音響技術者によって造られてから、新しいジャンルを指す言葉として定着しているそうだ。

mumblecore という単語の姉妹には、次のような音楽ジャンルがある。定義は「研究社オンライン・ディクショナリー」（KOD）による。

grindcore 　グラインドコア《1990 年代に発展したハードロック系の音楽》.
hardcore 　ハードコア《1980 年代半ばにパンクロックから発展したロック音楽の一種; テンポが速く, 攻撃的な歌と演奏を特徴とする》
thrashcore 　スラッシュコア (＝SPEED METAL).

ちなみに speed metal は

非常に早いテンポと重いビートを特徴とする大音響のロック heavy metal にパンクロックの暴力的かつ過激なメッセージを取り入れたもの; 1980 年代後半に New York などを中心に Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax などのグループが人気を得た; thrash, thrashcore, thrash metal もほぼ同義語

だそうだ。（最後の「ほぼ同義語」の「ほぼ」が面白い。多くの人には thrash も thrashcore も thrash metal も同じように聞こえるはずだが、細分化しがちな音楽サブカルチャーでは厳密に使い分ける人がいるから「ほぼ」が必要だったのだろう。）

辞書では -core で終わる他の音楽ジャンル名が見つからなかったが、ネットでは以下の語を発見できた。
