この間書いたように、外国語を学ぶときに教室などで使う言語については、今も昔も意見が分かれる。

昔の例をもう一つ。1888年に初版を持つ The Teaching of Languages in Schools では、W.H. Widgeryという人が次のように書いている。

Our whole system seems planned to give a self-conscious knowledge about the language and not the language itself.... If our object is to penetrate into the very arcana of another tongue, to think and feel as a Frenchman thinks and feels, then surely this will be accomplished the quicker, the more the English is kept out of sight.
（現在の教授法は、言語そのものではなく、言語に関する意識を与えることを企図しているようである。…外国語の奥義まで分かること、すなわちフランス人と同じように考えたり感じたりすることが我々の目的だとすると、英語を隠したほうが速いのだ。）

反対の意見は、C. Le Vert の A General and Practical System of Teaching and Learning Languages; Applied to All Languages, Especially the French という1842年の本に力強く提示されている。

[W]hosoever learns a second language must learn it by comparison with his own and in no other way; whereas the child cannot learn it in that manner; for he has no object for comparison.... The supposition, therefore, that a full-grown person can learn a second language in the very same manner that he learnt the first, amounts to an absurdity.
 （大人なら誰しも、第２言語を学ぶ際に母語との比較は避けられないが、子供はそのような比較対象を持たないので、同じ学び方はできない。…大人が母語と同じ方法で第２言語を学ぶことができるという仮説はばかげている。）

外国語をその言語だけを使って学ぶこと、すなわち母語への翻訳や母語での文法説明を避ける方法は direct method や natural method と呼ばれる。direct method という用語は、1900年ごろから盛んに使われるようになったようだ。例えば、Modern Language Teaching というジャーナルの1905年12月号には、"Direktor Walter on the Direct Method" という記事で、direct method の理念と実践がわかりやすく紹介される。その教授法は、会話の重視、翻訳や二言語辞書使用の回避など、現在の日本でも一部の教育者に強く支持されている教授法にほかならない。もちろん、母語の使用や訳読・翻訳の有益性を力強く主張する人も、昔も今もいる。

第２言語の有効な教授法について、科学的な研究は現在盛んに行われているにもかかわらず、このような根本的な問題についてコンセンサスがまだ得られていないのは、科学の限界か、人間の頑固さか、どちらを示しているだろう。
