B は The Royal Alphabet (1807年）から。

しばらくの間はアルファベットを子供に教える「くも本」を紹介する。

まず、1864年に出版された Alphabet of Objects の A。

高校時代、近所の友達が古本屋で珍しい本を見つけた。もう40年も経っているのでそのタイトルを覚えていないが、確か ...in Words of One Syllable で終わっていた。すなわち、「単音節の言葉のみで書かれている」本だった。英語では単語は長くなるにつれて難しくなるとされているので、短い単語だけなら、子供にもわかりやすいだろうという発想で書かれていたようだ。でも、少しでも考えてみたら無理があるとすぐにわかる。例えば、one, two, three のそれぞれが one syllable なので使えるが、seven には２つの音節があるので使えない。hand, leg, head は大丈夫だが、finger と elbow はダメ。子供向けの本にはどうしても使いたくなる mother,  father, sister, brother も全部アウト。

その本を思い出したのは、Internet Archive に新しく登録された「くも本」のリストに、1906年に出版された The Life of Abraham Lincoln for Young People: Told in Words of One Syllable があったからだ。書き出しはつぎのとおりだ。

　Near five scores of years have gone by since a poor, plain babe was born in a log hut on the banks of a small stream known as the “Big South Fork” of No-lin’s Creek. This was in Ken-tuc-ky and in what is now La-rue Coun-ty.
It was Sun-day, Feb. 12, 1809, when this child came to bless the world.
The hut, not much more than a cow-shed, held the fa-ther and moth-er, whose names where Thom-as and Nan-cy, and their girl child, Sa-rah. ...

これを見ると、可能なところでは、例えば one hundred を five scores に、daughter を girl child のように、二節以上の言葉を言い換えている。February も Feb. に略している。しかし、言い換えができない単語や固有名詞など、どうしても単音節にできない語は、無理にハイフンで区切っている。読みやすいはずの father はかえって読みにくい fath-er となってしまっているのだ。

一見、無用の試みだと思われるが、 ... Words of One Syllable と題した本は19世紀から20世紀にかけて米国では多数出版された。History of Japan in Words of One Syllable (1887) もあったが、多くは欧米の歴史書やキリスト教の教養書であった。アメリカ議会図書館のカタログには、以下の本が載せられている。

このような本が出版されなくなったのは「one syllable = easy to read」という等式が成立しなかったからだ。上の短い抜粋でも、girl child という表現は方言で使われないわけではないが daughter のほうが一般的だし、 five scores はその同義の one hundred よりかなり理解しにくいはずだ。音節数を無視して、実際に子供にとって読みやすい言葉で児童書が書かれるようになったら、... in Words of One Syllable というジャンルは絶滅した。

外国語を勉強しなおそうとする大人の中には、母語では児童書から読み始めたのだから、外国語も同じような方法で学ぼうと考える人がいる。無駄な試みではないが、学校や教科書で習った外国の言葉と、その言語の環境で育った子供たちが知っている言葉は、必ずしも一致しない。日本の学校英語教育でも、大学や社会で使う英語が重視されるので、子供特有の英語はほとんど無視されている。学習者用英和辞書の見出し語ラベルにもその傾向が見える。例えば、『新英和中辞典』（研究社）の見出し語には、「最重要基本語約 2000 語」「それに続く基本語約 5000 語」「次の約 8000 語」のそれぞれに印が付けられている。『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』（小学館）でも、「最重要語約1,800語」「大学入試程度の約4,600語」「社会人に必要な程度の約8,100語」に見出し語を分類する。両辞書の間に若干な違いがあるが、多くの単語は同等なカテゴリーに入る。例えば、happy, Tuesday, something はもっとも重要なレベルと記され、 hazy, transpire, sapphireはレベル３となっている。無印の言葉には、happenstance, transponder, sacrilege のように、使用頻度が低く、英語圏の子供も知らない言葉が多い。

しかし、無印の言葉、すなわち「日本人の英語学習者には重要ではない」とされる言葉には、５、６歳のネイティブの子供のほとんどが知っている単語もたくさん含まれている。私自身、小学校に入る前にすでに使っていた言葉には次の無印語がある（定義は『新英和中辞典』から）。

barf 《米俗》    ━[動] 吐く, もどす. ━[名] 嘔吐.
belly button ━[名] 《口》 へそ (navel).
glob ━[名] (クリーム･泥などの)かたまり.
gunk ━[名] 《俗》 べとべとして気持ちの悪いもの.
potty ━[名] 《口》 (子供用の)便器, おまる.
pus ━[名] 膿(うみ).
stinky ━[形] 《口》 臭い; いやな; くだらん.
yucky ━[形] 《口》 すごくまずい; 不快な.

英検や大学の入試には出ないであろうが、いずれも基本中の基本の言葉だ。なお、この中には belly button や potty のように、二音節以上の言葉もある。

７月末、約４年ぶりに米国へちょっと帰省しようと思っている。４年ぶりの日本国外への旅行にもなる。私のまわりには、一年に何回も外国に行く人が多いので、私の旅行嫌いがエキセントリックに見られるようだ。でも、旅行そのものはそれほど嫌いではない。大嫌いなのは長時間の飛行機搭乗だ。長身の私にとっては、近年ますます間隔が狭くなってきたシートに座りつづけることは拷問に等しいのだ。

それでも、船などでカリフォルニアへ行きたいわけでもない。昔、海洋の航行に少し憧れがあったが、約10年前に、Richard Henry Data, Jr. の旅行記 Two Years Before the Mast （『水夫としての二年間』）でホーン岬回りなどの恐ろしい記述を読んだら、死んでも船で海を渡りたくない気持ちになった。快適な海外旅行しかしたくない。

この間、 Internet Archive で不思議な出版物に出会った。派手な表紙に Chas. W. Poole's New Myriorama and Trips Abroad Illustrated Vocally, Musically & Pictorially と書いているが、 Myriorama という言葉は初耳だったし、最初はどういうものかわからなかった。それで、ページを捲って様々なフォントで綴った文を読んだら、19世紀の終わりごろ、イギリスで興業された見世物のガイドブックだとわかった。ロンドンから出発して、ナイアガラの滝や建設中のパナマ運河を経て、アフリカの奴隷売買やアルプスの雪崩を見てからロンドンに戻るという、絵と歌と解説による「旅」だったようだ。当時の新聞は、次のように書いていた。

The wonderful popularity of Poole's Myriorama has been vividly demonstrated by overflowing audiences, who have been warm in their approbation of the beautiful pictures exhibited to their delighted gaze. The variety entertainment is liberally supplied. Altogether Poole's Myriorama is an artistic, beautiful, and varied entertainment, which combines amusement with instruction, and which, while it delights the eye, improves the artistic faculty, informs the mind, and in some sort places the untravelled on a level with the travelled citizen. It can hardly fail to thoroughly satisfy and please all who visit it.

現在、少しは快適になった海外旅行などしなくても、映画、テレビ、インターネット等で全世界が手のひらに入ったようではあるが、1889年に戻ってロンドン子たちと一緒に Poole's Myriorama を見る方法はない。
