語尾コレクションにまた一つ追加する。まず、ウェブ上の用例から。

この語尾は Kenkyusha Online Dictionary に [EV]（追加語）としてすでに載っている。

palooza

生きている語尾の存在にまた気が付いた。今回は -itude だ。もちろん、この語尾を備えて定着している言葉が既に多数ある。例えば、

decrepitude n. 老いぼれ(の状態), 老衰, もうろく; 老朽.
exactitude n. 正確[精確]さ, 精密度, 厳正, きちょうめんさ (preciseness).
incertitude n. 不確実, 不確か, 不定; 疑惑, 疑念; 不安定, 不定.
solitude n. 1 独居, 孤独 (solitariness). 2 《詩》 寂しい[人里離れた]場所, 幽所 (seclusion).

でも最近は -itude が新しい言葉を造るのにもよく使われている。私がこの語尾の生存に気が付いたのは、次の文を読んだときだった。

これは、2004年にユーモア雑誌 The Onion にあった、"Asshole Admits To Being Asshole In Supreme Asshole Move" という記事からの抜粋。

比喩的な意味での asshole にはいろいろなニュアンスがあるが、ここでは「いやな奴」（ルミナス英和辞典）や「むかつくやつ」（リーダーズ英和辞典）の訳がぴったり。-itude の意味は「〜の性質」なので、 assholitude は「いやな奴であること」のような意味になる。-itudeで終わる言葉は通例文語的で硬いものが多いので、下品な asshole と組み合わせると新語そのものがユーモラスになる。

ウェブで他の例を探してみたら、多数あった。

cyberspace（ネット上の仮想空間）という単語は1982年から英語で使われていて、「サイバースペース」や「サイバー空間」として日本語にも入っている。最近は、「〜space」で終わる他の言葉をよく目にするようになった。下記のウェブ用例の「〜space」は、いずれも cyberspace と同様に「思考、知覚、認識などが行なう心理的な空間」のような意味を持っており、まだ辞書にも載っていないようだ。

暫く沈黙してしまったが、また英語の新語尾を紹介する。（紹介済みには -dar と -tard、-rati、-ista、そして -holic と -licious がある。）

今回の -osity が特に新しい語尾ではないことは認める。昔から animosity「悪意」、curiosity「好奇心」、viscosity「粘着性」などがある。しかし、最近はブログなどで -osity で終わる新語をよく見かけるようになった。

下記でウェブで拾った用例を示す。【KOD】と書いている定義は、研究社 Online Dictionary からコピペしたものだ。【TG】は、私が勝手に作った定義を示す。

verbosity （「ことば数の多さ, 多弁, 饒舌, 冗漫」【KOD】）に陥らないように、この投稿をここで終わりにする。

引き続き、英語の新しい語尾を二つ紹介する。（前に -rati、-ista、そして -holic と -licious を紹介した。）

まず、-dar。

これは radar （レーダー）に由来する語尾。よく使われる gaydar 「ゲイを見分ける能力」（ルミナス英和辞典）は、「ゲイダー」として日本語にも入ってきたようだ。英語ではその他に lezdar （レズビアンを見分ける能力） 、 Jewdar （ユダヤ人を…）、 geekdar （オタクを…）なども造語されている。

次は、名詞の retard に由来する -tard。

形容詞の retarded は、20世紀の初めごろから「発達障害のある」の意味で一般に使われていたが、その後、差別表現と見なされるようになり、新聞などでは使用禁止となった。現在はその代わりに  developmentally delayed や mentally disabled などと言う。しかし、今でも、特に子どもや若者の会話では retarded が「ばかな」、 retard が「まぬけ」の意味で頻繁に使われている。

retard から -tard を切り離して造られた以下の俗語はウェブ上に見られる。いずれも下品で強い軽蔑を表しているので、ここでは定義を与えないでリストアップすることに止める。

Savage Love というコラムを執筆する Dan Savage 氏は、世間が自粛してもしばらくは retard や retarded をよく使っていたが、読者から批判を受けて現在はその代わりに leotard や leotarded を使うことになった。
