インドの新聞記事ですぐ目に付くインド英語は lakh とcrore だ。例えば、今朝、私のホテル部屋に届いた The Times of India には次の用例があった。

The state’s requirement [for milk] is 4.5 lakh litres per day while the state is producing only 36,000 litres per day.

After a delay of well over three months, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP on Monday sacked minister of state for transport Gulabrao Deokar from the ministry for his alleged involvement in the ₹32 crore Jalgaon housing scam. [「₹」はルピーの略字]

研究社Online Dictionaryでもアクセスできる Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary には、それぞれが次のように定義されている。

lakh /læk/
noun (IndE) a hundred thousand

crore /krɔː(r)/
noun (IndE) ten million; one hundred lakhs

ということで、4.5 lakh litres は「45万リトル」で、 ₹32 crore は「3.2億ルピー」の意味。

lakh と crore はまだ会話で聞いていない（と思う）が、ごく普通の言葉のようだ。
